Description
This is Tanzania at its most authentic. Follow the herds of wildebeest, zebra and antelope as they graze and browse along a circular route that they have followed since time immemorial. Watch the big cats stalk them. Visit parks where elephant, rhino, buffalo and other iconic African wildlife are resident year-round.
Depending on your month of travel, you will focus on slightly different areas, specifically to optimize your game viewing experience. Both the Northern and the Southern Routes include Tanzania’s most important wildlife areas - Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park.
Itineraries start on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, the airport named after Mount “Kili”, Africa’s tallest peak. You’ll be transferred to bustling Arusha, one of Tanzania's fastest-growing cities which serves as the major cultural and economic hub in the north. Your accommodation for the night, Arameru Lodge, is set amid tranquil gardens, and is home to dik-diks, monkeys and a large number of bird species, providing you with a warm welcome to Tanzania, or as it was once called, Tanganyika.
The Northern Route itinerary, which is in effect from late March through October, travels from Arusha to Tarangire National Park, a small but mighty park with a river that flows year round. Wildlife come to drink and wallow at the river when other water sources dry up, making it an excellent place to view game. Tarangire is also famous for its stands of grand Baobab trees – some of which are 3,000 years old. Baobabs store water to last them through the dry months, swelling to enormous girths. Then, travel to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you’ll explore magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, a spectacular geographical feature and a rich wildlife area. The safari ends in the Serengeti, East Africa’s legendary wildlife park.
The Southern Route itinerary is in effect during the flanking months of January, February, early March, November and December. During these months the herds are dropping their calves, making them vulnerable to attack from predators who stalk them, creeping through the long grasses of the savannah. You become a witness to the circle of life. The Southern Route also includes Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with a day in the Ngorongoro Crater, and Olduvai from where you’ll explore the eastern Serengeti. The safari ends in the northern Serengeti.
While in the Serengeti, you will have the option to add a hot air balloon flight. This is a thrilling adventure on which you can expect panoramic views of the Serengeti plains, and wildlife such as lion, elephant, zebra, and more.
