Itinerary
-
Day 1 - Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha (D)
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be greeted by a transfer driver and taken to your accommodation for an overnight stay. The rest of the day will be at leisure and you may choose to relax at the hotel or perhaps explore the town of Arusha (taxi required). In the evening, you will attend a briefing in preparation for your upcoming trek.
-
Day 2 Arusha – Lemosho Gate – Big Tree Camp (B,L,D)
In the morning, you’ll be picked up at the lodge and driven to Lemosho Gate (7,825 feet). Here, you’ll check in with park authorities before beginning your trek through dense rainforest. The trail follows a moderately steep path, guiding you through a stunning, untouched forest to Big Tree Camp, your destination for the day.
-
Day 3 - Big Tree Camp - Shira Camp 2 (B,L,D)
Today’s long trek begins on a narrow trail through the rainforest. As you ascend, the forest gradually thins, giving way to heath and moorland where plants like erica and lobelia dominate the landscape. You’ll cross Shira Ridge and, after 4 to 5 hours of trekking, arrive at Shira Camp 1. Here, you’ll stop for lunch, rest, and take in the impressive views of Mount Meru and the Rift Valley.
For the final stretch (about 3 hours), you’ll climb another 820 feet in elevation. The scenery shifts once more as you pass towering giant senecios that can reach nearly 30 feet tall. By the time you reach Shira Camp 2, you’ll settle in for the night and, if conditions are clear, enjoy a beautiful sunset view of the Kibo summit.
-
Day 4 Shira Camp 2 – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp (B,L,D)
Today you’ll climb about 2,300 feet, though you’ll spend the night only slightly higher than the previous evening. This helps your body acclimatize, as you’ll reach an elevation of over 15,100 feet before descending again, giving you a chance to see how you respond to the altitude.
The trek begins with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau toward the Lava Tower. As you climb, vegetation becomes sparse and the terrain shifts into an alpine desert. The route then passes through the broad Barranco Valley, known for its lobelia and towering giant senecio plants. After 6 to 7 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Barranco Camp, often considered the most beautiful campsite on Kilimanjaro.
-
Day 5 - Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (B,L,D)
Today’s trek features a series of ascents and descents, beginning with the most challenging section of the route, the Barranco Wall. This steep climb may require you to use your hands for balance in a few spots, as there are no defined paths, but your guides will be there to assist and ensure your safety throughout.
Once at the top, you’ll continue along a mountain ridge with stunning views of Kibo’s southern glacier and the summit above. By around midday, you’ll arrive at Karanga Camp in time for lunch.
-
Day 6 - Karanga Camp– Barafu Camp (B,L,D)
After breakfast you will walk along a trail that passes through an alpine desert area until you reach the destination of today – the Barafu Camp. In the afternoon you can relax and stretch your legs in preparation for the upcoming summit night. You will have dinner early to catch a few hours’ sleep, before you will be woken up at around midnight.
-
Day 7 - Barafu Camp– Uhuru Peak– Mweka Camp (B,L,D)
After some hot tea and a light snack, the climb begins at around midnight. By torchlight you will start walking on the lava ash that is still frozen. After 5 to 7 hours, you will arrive at Stella Point (5,730 m), the crater rim of Mt Kilimanjaro. Another 1 to 2 hours climb along the crater ridge will lead you to the summit of Uhuru Peak. From “Africa’s Roof”, you will be able to see the surrounding landscape being lit up by the rising sun – a truly liberating experience. After a short break and taking photos, you will return to Barafu Camp just before midday where the rest of the crew will be waiting for you. You will have a warm lunch and rest for about 1 to 2 hours before you make your way down to the Mweka Camp about 3 hours away.
-
Day 8 - Mweka Camp– Mweka Gate – Arusha (B, D)
The final leg of your amazing adventure begins after breakfast with a traditional farewell ceremony from the mountain crew. Then a gentle 2 to 3 hours’ descent through the rainforest continues to Mweka Gate, where your driver will be waiting for you. He will take you back to the Lodge and after a warm shower, the rest of the day is free to rest or to celebrate your achievement.
-
Day 9 - Arusha – Zanzibar (B,D)
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Arusha Airport for your flight to Zanzibar. On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel for a 3-night stay.
-
Day 10-11 – Zanzibar (B,L,D)
For two leisurely days in Zanzibar, ease into island life by exploring the winding alleys of Stone Town, where carved wooden doors, bustling markets, and waterfront views set the tone.
Visit Prison Island to see giant tortoises and enjoy clear blue waters, then unwind on Zanzibar’s pristine beaches with soft white sand and turquoise seas. On your second day, take a guided spice tour through lush plantations to experience the island’s famous cloves, vanilla, and nutmeg, followed by a relaxed sunset dhow cruise along the coast—an ideal way to soak in Zanzibar’s laid-back charm.
-
Day 12 – Depart Zanzibar (B)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward flight arrangements.
