Description
A week in Portugal, centered on the capital, offers a deep dive into Lisbon's two main destinations – Lisbon and Porto. Take an introductory tour of Lisbon to get acquainted with the neighborhoods. Wander the hills of Alfama, where laundry hangs above cobblestone alleys, and the melancholy strains of Fado music drift from doorways. Dedicate time to the grand monasteries and be sure to stop to enjoy delectable Pastéis de Nata in Belém. A day trip to Sintra offers exploration of its whimsical castles, from the vibrant Pena Palace to the mystical Quinta da Regaleira.
Next, a train journey delivers you to Porto for three nights of discovery. Here, enjoy the freedom to meander along the Douro River's Ribeira district, ducking into historic port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for spontaneous tastings. Explore the stunning tilework of São Bento station at your own pace and find a quiet cafe to savor a francesinha. Take in the Douro Valley on a full day exploration that will introduce you to Portugal’s port wine production. This itinerary balances Lisbon's essential sights with the relaxed, independent charm of Porto.
